Forgotten Sunnah: Be fit or bust

by admin on October 30, 2009

There is an oft repeated but seldom followed Sunnah (Tradition) of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). In an authentic narration, he said:

The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1381), Ibn Maajah (3349); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (2265).

So, if I’m reading it right, regular meal is equal to couple of morsels. a full throttle chow down is equal to 1/3 of the stomach. Fitness, indeed, is a forgotten sunnah. Unless compelled to eat less due to poverty or sickness, we pretty much tend to fill up the “vessel” till it hurts. And this is as much an introspection as it is a general observation.

Here is a survey to collectively jump start a fitness campaign. InshaAllah, lets keep an eye on that scale and act accordingly.

Is our Ummah gravitationally challenged – Part I

by Adil Faisal on October 28, 2009

As an Ummah, are we overweight? Have the many hadiths to keep our midriff in check gone in vain?

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women. It’s a simple but effective benchmark to help us find an answer.  Here’s the BMI benchmark. You are

  • Underweight = a BMI of <18.5
  • Normal weight = BMI between 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight = BMI between 25-29.9
  • Obese = BMI of 30 or greater

Hyderabadi Biriyani – an emotional encounter

by admin on October 25, 2009

Shared by my good friend, the editor of The Muslim Link paper. A Chef getting all emotional over his rendering of the Hyderabadi Kacchi biriyani. The breakdown occurs at 9:00 in the video. Kidding aside, it’s a pretty good rundown of the fairly complex process. Not for those who are counting calories ….
